UPM Pietarsaari mill
​The Pietarsaari pulp mill is located in the Gulf of Bothnia in western Finland. The mill site also houses UPM's Alholma sawmill,  Alholmens Kraft power plant and UPM's wood procurement offices. The latest modernisations at the pulp mill include a major rebuild in 2004 and waste water treatment plant upgrade in 2013.

​Annual capacity: 800,000 tonnes of softwood and hardwood pulp.

UPM Pietarsaari mill

​Personnel at the pulp mill: 200 employees.

Altogether 750 people work at the Pietarsaari mill site employed by UPM and other companies in the forestry value chain.

​Besides pulp, the mill produces biomass based electricity, biochemicals, soap and crude tall oil as a production residue.

The mill generates more energy than it uses. The surplus electricity is sold to the national grid.

​Noteworthy facts

​During the last decade, the mill has been able to significantly reduce its impact on the local environment, especially waterways. We have decreased the chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 45% per tonne of pulp.
