Modern plantations for sustainable eucalyptus

UPM Plantation operations

The raw material supply for your eucalyptus pulp is in good hands.

UPM Forestal Oriental, our eucalyptus plantation forestry company in Uruguay operational since 1990, is the centre of expertise for our plantation operations.

UPM Forestal Oriental owns about 230,000 hectares of land, of which about 60 % is planted with eucalyptus. The rest of the land is protected or is used for forestry-related infrastructure, cattle grazing and other non-plantation operations. All of UPM's forest plantations are certified to FSC® and PEFCTM.

The company also operates two advanced nurseries where we have developed and propagated highly-productive, locally-adapted eucalyptus varieties as part of our tree improvement programme.

In 2005, UPM Forestal Oriental founded the Fomento Programme to engage local landowners in sustainable eucalyptus production.

Ensuring the source of wood

Plantation operations
UPM plantations cover the majority of the demand for wood raw material at the UPM Fray Bentos pulp mill. The rest is purchased from independent suppliers who have been working in close cooperation with UPM Forestal Oriental for many years.
