(7 April 2017) UPM Pulp was invited by the Consulate General of Finland in Shanghai to support the Finnish-Chinese Students Tree Planting Event on 26 March. Arranged jointly with the Yangpu District Government, Shanghai Finnish School and Yangpu District Education Bureau, this event celebrated the centenary of Finland's independence and the Finnish tree planting campaign “The Spruce Of The Future”. This campaign commemorates the history of Independence Spruce planted in Finland in 1917, but at the same time looks to the future and the next generation, children and youth.
Over 70 people gathered in the Yangpu Park to plant red maple trees. Most of the participants were children from the Finnish school in Shanghai and Yangpu's local primary school, teachers as well as representatives of the Finnish consulate and the Finnish sponsoring companies Fiskars, Nordwater and Medialink. UPM Pulp’s Shanghai sales team was proud to participate in the event and they also invited Vinda, one of China’s leading tissue paper producers, to join them.
Welcome greetings were presented by Xu Jianhua, Deputy Mayor of Shanghai Yangpu District, Jan Wahlberg, Consul General of Finland in Shanghai, and Connie Bi, UPM Pulp’s Sales Director for Apac.
In her speech Connie Bi highlighted the importance of trees in maintaining life on the earth: trees and forests clean air and water, mitigate climate change and maintain biodiversity by providing a place to live for a variety of plants and animals. At the same time forests provide us with wood raw material for many products like tissue, books and food wrapping, a great place for recreation, and even food like herbs, mushrooms, berries and game meat.
Some examples of these gifts from forests were distributed at the event in the form of blueberry juice and dried lingonberries.
Finland was promoted as the country of clean water, safe food, a leading education system, sustainable forestry and the “best shovels in the world" by Fiskars. However, by far the most exciting character of the day was naturally the Moomin who walked among the people waving his hand – and each and every one wanted to take a selfie! Moomins are characters created for the famous series of books by Finnish illustrator and writer Tove Jansson.
Did you know that tree planting days are celebrated annually all over the world in various forms? Every year UPM arranges and participates in several tree planting events together with its stakeholders.
