Long track record as forest industry leader
UPM’s Biofore concept where we use wood-based biomass efficiently and smartly dates back almost 130 years. In 1892, the company that preceded UPM started producing birchwood spools on the historic Kaukas industrial estate in southeast Finland.
Turning spools produced large quantities of wood shavings. Even in those days, we didn’t want to waste wood. The brilliant people at Kaukas came up with the idea of using the excess birch for making cellulose pulp. The first version of UPM Betula was born.
