The selected projects, which will be carried out between 2025 and 2027, focus on little-studied biological groups and environments such as spiders, millipedes, insects, and crustaceans, and incorporate innovative techniques such as the use of environmental DNA. The proposals were submitted by research teams from the Faculty of Sciences (UDELAR) and the University of Guelph (Canada).
"We are very pleased with the diversity and quality of the proposals received. We are happy to contribute to the generation of quality scientific knowledge, while strengthening ties with academic institutions," said Iván Grela, UPM Biodiversity Coordinator.
The three selected projects are:
Diversity of spiders and millipedes in the flat hills of northeastern Uruguay
Institution: Faculty of Sciences – UDELAR
This study seeks to characterize the spider community and identify indicator and priority species for conservation in a unique environment in the northeast of the country.
Diversity of insects and crustaceans in the El Retiro conservation area (Paysandú)
Institution: Faculty of Sciences – UDELAR
The project focuses on assessing the biodiversity of invertebrates in different ecosystems, including water quality and the presence of invasive species.
Assessment of terrestrial invertebrate biodiversity using environmental DNA
Institution: University of Guelph, Canada
Using metabarcoding techniques, this study positions Uruguay in a global research network on terrestrial biodiversity through the use of environmental DNA.
With this initiative, UPM reaffirms its commitment to conservation and sustainable development, promoting joint work between science, territory, and community.
