Driving upgrades in the tissue paper industry – UPM Asia Research Center

In 2007, UPM’s Asia Research Center (AsRC) was established in Changshu, China, becoming UPM Group's main research and development base in Asia. As a key part of UPM’s global R&D system, AsRC specializes in tissue paper evaluation. From pulp physical property analysis and fibre characteristic research to sheet performance testing and end-product benchmarking, the center has built a full-chain technical capability and data system, providing systematic and ongoing technical support internally and to customers worldwide.

Liang Xinping is a researcher at AsRC, primarily responsible for technical support to the pulp business, and works closely with the technical marketing and service teams globally. From her perspective, the core value of the research center lies not only in advanced equipment and comprehensive testing capabilities, but also in understanding the market and customer needs, turning data into insight.

Tailored solutions for complex requirements

Today, the tissue paper market is highly competitive and customer needs are becoming increasingly diverse and specialized. On one hand, product quality continues to rise, requiring companies to balance performance, efficiency and cost. On the other hand, consumption scenarios are becoming more segmented: from traditional facial tissue, toilet paper and kitchen paper to differentiated products such as wet wipes and moisturizing tissues, all demanding higher standards of fibre compatibility.

In its day to day technical support work, AsRC focuses its research on the core issues that matter most to tissue paper customers, including:

  • How to optimize fibre cost structure while maintaining quality
  • How to improve softness while preserving strength
  • How to address practical quality issues such as lint and dust shedding, stickies and contaminants

The research center conducts systematic analysis spanning raw material properties, pulping processes and end applications. Combining experimental validation with data-driven analysis, it identifies targeted furnish solutions to improve production efficiency while maintaining or enhancing product quality, minimizing customers' valuable machine trial time.

Data-driven, precise decision making

At AsRC, "data-driven research" is not just a slogan but a working system built on years of accumulated knowledge. As Liang Xinping puts it: "Data alone doesn't give you the answer, but it helps us find direction faster."

Guided by this principle, AsRC continuously expands its pulp property database, compiling performance data on UPM and market pulps to support data-driven furnish decisions and process optimization. The team also monitors finished tissue product trends, evaluates the impact of fibre combinations on end-product performance and maintains a comprehensive database of tissue product and machine contaminants characterized through chemical and physical analysis. Combined with an extensive library of historical case studies, these resources enable faster root cause analysis and more targeted recommendations, saving customers both time and resources.

This kind of work elevates research support from single-instance testing to systematic judgment, giving customers a clearer basis for their decisions.

From problem solving to joint innovation

As competition in the industry intensifies, customer focus is shifting from solving problems to process and product innovations. In recent years, AsRC has become increasingly involved in customers’ new product development and technology upgrade projects. The technical marketing and service team connects with customer and market needs, while the research center handles experimental design, performance evaluation and technical validation, combining market insight with scientific research.

Before large-scale production of a new product begins, systematic testing and data analysis help customers objectively assess feasibility, reduce uncertainty and accelerate development. Many innovative ideas take shape gradually through this kind of open collaboration.

Research center with almost 20 year history brings long-term value

With nearly 20 years of experience and a team of over 20 specialists, AsRC combines deep tissue expertise, advanced analytical capabilities and extensive data resources to help customers improve quality, reduce costs, solve technical challenges and accelerate innovation.

As Liang Xinping says: "The value of research isn't just in generating data. It's in turning that data into insight that solves real problems."

Looking ahead, AsRC remains committed to bridging tissue market needs and research innovation, helping customers improve performance, solve technical challenges and strengthen their competitiveness.
