What is hardwood pulp?

Simply put, hardwood pulp is pulp that is made from hardwood trees, such as birch, eucalyptus and maple. At UPM Pulp we make bleached hardwood kraft pulp from birch wood produced in our mills in Finland and eucalyptus pulp produced in our mills in Uruguay. The morphology and structure of hardwood pulp fibres make them ideal for products that require smoothness and good printing properties. Another benefit of hardwood pulp is that it’s well suited for products that require higher bulk.

What are the products of hardwood pulp?

Hardwood pulp is a versatile raw material that serves as the foundation for a wide range of products across various industries. Due to the short fibre lengths of hardwood trees like birch and eucalyptus, the resulting pulp provides a smooth finish, ideal for products such as tissue, high-quality printing and writing papers, specialty papers, and packaging and carton boards.

Our hardwood pulp mills are located in Uruguay and Finland

We produce hardwood pulp in Uruguay and Finland. In Uruguay we produce UPM Euca eucalyptus pulp at our Fray Bentos and Paso de los Toros pulp mills. In Finland we produce UPM Betula, our northern bleached hardwood kraftpulp, at the Kymi and Pietarsaari pulp mills. Together, our mills in Uruguay and Finland provide reliable quality and a high level of supply security to customers worldwide.

What is the difference between hardwood pulp and softwood pulp?

Although both hardwood pulp and softwood pulp can be used in various applications, they each give products their own qualities. One key difference between hardwood and softwood pulp is their fibre length. Hardwood fibres are shorter than the fibres in softwood pulp. Hardwood pulp is particularly suitable for products that require smoothness and higher bulk, while softwood pulp is well suited for products that require high strength and durability.
