Eucalyptus plant.

Our bleached eucalyptus kraft (BEK) pulp UPM Euca is supplied from two modern pulp mills in Uruguay. Our mills in Uruguay produce eucalyptus pulp from certified and traceable wood with a combined annual production capacity of 3.4 million tonnes. UPM Euca delivers consistent quality, cost-efficient performance and excellent runnability.

UPM Euca is suitable for various end-use segments, such as:

  • Tissue
  • Board
  • Specialty grades
  • Printing & writing

Consistent pulp quality through a blend of two eucalyptus species with complementary fibre properties

UPM Euca is an optimal blend of two main eucalyptus wood species – eucalyptus grandis and eucalyptus dunnii. Together, they provide complementary fibre properties that, combined with careful raw material selection, determine the properties of UPM Euca pulp.

When properly combined, their fibre properties help reduce energy consumption in the refining process and enhance end-product quality across different end-use segments. Stable process controls produce high-brightness pulp with low brightness reversion and excellent cleanliness characteristics.

Eucalyptus grandis

Eucalyptus grandis has more slender fibres which enable faster refinability, improved bonding and higher tensile strength along with a higher fibre number resulting in excellent optical properties.

Eucalyptus dunnii

Eucalyptus dunnii has higher basic density and thick walled, less collapsible fibres that provides bulk and easier dewatering properties.

Paso de los Toros

Eucalyptus pulp mills in Uruguay

The 2.1 million tonne capacity Paso de los Toros mill in central Uruguay started operations in 2023, adding to the 1.3 million tonne capacity of the Fray Bentos mill in southwestern Uruguay. These two mills provide customers with consistent UPM Euca quality, excellent mill availability and a high level of global supply security. At both mills consistent raw material from certified and traceable sources, state-of-the-art production technology – delivered by the same main machinery supplier – and strict process controls along the entire production process guarantee consistent quality, cost-efficient operations and trouble-free operations.

Continuous development of pulp production

The development of UPM Euca has its roots in our tree breeding program and our work in UPM’s three tree nurseries, providing high-quality seedlings for plantations. The aim is to enhance wood yield and fibre quality, while ensuring that trees adapt to different forestry sites and climate conditions.

Process efficiency is continuously developed at our UPM Fray Bentos R&D lab. The work covers pulping, bleaching and drying processes as well as wood chemistry and fibre properties. The facilities are used for clone evaluation and selection (commercial deployment), wood supply assessment and mill process development studies.
